Emiliano Buendia’s stoppage-time goal downed Arsenal in a top-of-the-table clash at Villa Park on Saturday. The Villans won the thriller 2-1.
Buendia, who replaced Matty Cash in the 87th minute, scored the winner with the last kick of the match after a scramble inside the box.
A rebound fell kindly for him, and he left David Raya rooted with his curling shot from close range in the 90+5 minute.
Cash opened the scoring with a stunner after connecting with a cross in the 36th minute, sending the home supporters into a frenzy.
However, Leandro Trossard, who replaced Eberechi Eze at the start of the second half, equalised for the Gunners in the 52nd minute after a rebound from Emiliano Martinez’s save fell to him.
Martin Odegaard came close to scoring when he unleashed a thunderous shot from outside the box in the 70th minute, but Martinez got his fingertips to it, pushing the ball over the crossbar.
Under pressure in the dying minutes of the game, Jurrien Timber nearly scored an own goal trying to clear a pacey cross, leaving his goalkeeper, David Raya, rooted. Lucky for him, the ball never went inside the net.
Buendia’s late goal secured maximum points for Unai Emery’s side, taking them to the second spot in the Premier League standings.
The Villans have 30 points after 15 games, while Mikel Arteta’s side remains on 33 points after the 2-1 defeat.
