Mikel Merino scored a hat-trick when Spain demolished Turkey 6-0 in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Torku Arena on Sunday, 7 September 2025.

Mikel Merino, who plays for Arsenal, netted in the 22nd, 45+1, and 57th minutes when Spain put on a show in front of their opponent’s crowd. Barcelona’s Pedri scored a brace in the Group E encounter.

The other scorer for Spain was Ferran Torres of Barcelona. Torres was subbed on in the first half after Nicolas Williams was taken off due to injury.

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal also played a pivotal role in his nation’s convincing victory. He registered two assists on the night.

Spain is topping Group E with six points and has scored a whopping nine goals in two matches. Other countries in the group are Georgia, Turkey, and Bulgaria.

Have Turkey and Spain Won in Their 2026 World Cup Qualifiers?

Coming into today’s crucial clash, Turkey and Spain had both won their first matches of their 2026 World Cup qualification campaigns. Luis de la Fuente’s charges beat Bulgaria 3-0 on Thursday, 4 September 2025. Mikel Oyarzabal, Marc Cucurella, and Mikel Merino scored for Spain in the first half of the game.

Turkey edged Georgia 3-2 in a thrilling encounter also played on the same day. Mert Muldur opened the score for Turkey, and Kerem Akturkoglu netted a brace in their hard-fought victory.

Turkey vs Spain: Last Two Matches

The two nations last met in a competitive match in 2016. Spain put on a show in that EURO match on 17 June 2016. La Roja demolished Turkey 3-0. Álvaro Morata scored a brace in the game.

In another match in 2009, Spain edged Turkey 2-1. The encounter was part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Spain went on to lift the prestigious World Cup trophy in South Africa. They beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the final on 3 July 2010.
