Ten-man AC Milan edged Napoli 2-1 at San Siro on matchday five of Serie A on Sunday, 28 September 2025. Milan moved to the top of the table after ending the reigning champions’ unbeaten streak in the 2025/26 campaign.
AC Milan earned a massive three points after defending waves of attacks from Napoli, who now occupy the second spot in the standings following their first defeat of the season.
Massimiliano Allegri’s side took an early lead when Alexis Saelemaekers scored from close range in the 3rd minute after being set up by Christian Pulisic. Pulisic then made it 2-0 in the 31st minute of the match. Milan was cruising 2-0 going into the halftime break.
AC Milan’s Pervis Estupinan Gets a Red Card
In a twist of events, Pervis Estupinan caused a penalty in the 53rd minute, and then he was sent off for the same offence in the 58th minute after a VAR review. Kevin De Bruyne pulled one back for Antonio Conte’s team when he converted from the spot in the 60th minute.
With Milan a man down, Napoli increased the tempo of the match, but Milan stood their ground. David Neres, who replaced Scott McTominay in the 73rd minute, caused problems on the right side.
Whenever he received the ball, he cut inside and then launched rockets with his left foot. He tried his best to find the back of the net from a distance.
In the 90+1 minute, Neres came close to levelling the score when he danced past his marker and took a curling shot that beat the keeper, only to hit the left post. Neres again dribbled past his opponent in the 90+7 minute and unleashed another powerful shot with his left foot, but Milan’s keeper Mike Maignan was equal to the task.
Maignan made a brilliant save, ultimately protecting his team’s one-goal advantage. Luka Modric also put on a man-of-the-match performance when his side was under pressure.

AC Milan vs Napoli: Head-to-Head
On 30 March 2025, Napoli edged AC Milan 2-1 in Round 30 of the 2024/25 Serie A campaign. Napoli scored both their goals in the first half. Matteo Politano netted in the second minute of the game, and Romelu Lukaku scored in the 19th minute.
AC Milan missed a penalty in the second half. Santiago Gimenez failed to convert from the spot in the 69th minute. Milan’s only goal of the match came in the 84th minute. Luka Jovic scored.
Napoli also took maximum points at San Siro Stadium in Round 10 of the league on 29 October 2024. The visitors thumped the hosts 2-0. Romelu Lukaku was on target in the fifth minute of the clash. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored the second goal in the 43rd minute.
AC Milan had a goal disallowed in the 47th minute. The VAR check found that Alvaro Morata was offside when he scored.
