Coventry City embarrassed Newcastle United 4-1 in a Premier League thriller at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday night, 12 October 2026.
Newly Promoted Coventry City Beats Newcastle United 4-1
The 4-1 home victory over Newcastle United was Coventry’s second Premier League win since their promotion. Before the impressive victory, Frank Lampard’s side had only scored one goal and won once in the league.
Lampard’s team scored four goals against Newcastle, taking their Premier League goal tally to five. In six games, Coventry has now won two and lost four.
Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the spot in the 6th minute after Lukas Hornicek committed a foul inside the box. Sidiki Cherif then doubled the hosts’ lead two minutes after the halftime break.
Sven Botman pulled one back for the visitors in the 70th minute, giving his side a glimmer of hope in the thriller. However, Ellis Simms extended the home side’s lead to 3-1 in the 82nd minute. Off the bench, Stephen Mfuni hammered the final nail in Newcastle’s coffin, making it 4-1 in the 86th minute.
The latest victory helped Coventry climb to 14th place in the standings, while Newcastle slipped to 11th position with two wins, two draws, and two defeats.
Newcastle United Supporters Slam Coach
After the match, SportPurse compiled some of the interesting reactions from Newcastle United supporters. Commenting on the Magpies’ X post, the Toon Army criticised Matthias Jaissle, the newly appointed head coach. Jaissle replaced Eddie Howe on 5 August 2026.
@AngelNufc commented:
“Losing 4-1 to Coventry is embarrassing. No tactics, no control, no clue. Three weeks to work on things and we look no better. Getting ripped apart by Frank Lampard. What the hell is going on?”
@BritishTaiga wrote:
“A chance to go 4th against the worst promoted team. And we fumbled it.”
@ToonGaff said:
“Refund the travelling fans. Consecutive hammerings to relegation fodder. Absolutely shameful.”
@Nico_NUFC added:
“An absolutely terrifying lack of quality and composure in both boxes and a manager more interested in his hair than tactics. What the f**k is he actually doing with them? That’s as bad as I’ve seen us play since Bruce.”
Frank Lampard’s Post-Match Reaction
In a post-match interview, Lampard praised his players’ work ethic after the win, adding that it was “a complete performance”.
He also applauded 19-year-old Cherif for his stellar performance and for scoring a stunner in the match.
“(He is) very, very exciting. He’s so young. He’s 19. He’s got a really good manner, a really good way about him as a lad. He wants to train, and he wants to learn. He’s quite quiet, but on the pitch today he showed a lot of personality.”
Lampard believes that there’s more to come from Cherif, adding that the teenager will develop into a star as he gains more experience.
“He’ll get better because we can work with him and he’ll just develop, I think, as you go, but when you see the quality of the strike, when you see his work ethic and hold-up play at 19, you know, there’s a lot to come from him.”
