Christian Kofane and Junior Tchamadeu’s goals helped Cameroon eliminate South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at Al Medina Stadium in Morocco on Sunday.
Cameroon advanced to the AFCON quarter-finals after edging South Africa 2-1 in a closely contested match. Junior Tchamadeu opened the scoring for the Indomitable Lions in the 34th minute, netting a rebound from close range.
Bundesliga goal poacher Christian Kofane, assisted by Mahamadou Nagida, extended Cameroon’s lead in the second minute of the second half, scoring a header from close range in the 47th minute.
Off the bench, Evidence Makgopa pulled one back for the South Africans in the 88th minute, assisted by another substitute, Aubrey Modiba. Makgopa nearly made it 2-2 in the 90+1 minute, but his header missed the target by a whisker.
Hugo Broos made unnecessary changes to the Bafana Bafana lineup that won against Zimbabwe. Why so many defensive-minded players?
There’s a reason why Nkosinathi Sibisi and Bathusi Aubaas are not regular starters at Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, respectively.
South Africa needed a goal badly, and Broos took out Oswin Appollis, replacing him with Evidence Makgopa. Appollis can score and play dangerous crosses for the likes of Makgopa and Lyle Foster. Why substitute him?
South African players enjoy attacking football, let them be! Throw in the likes of Sipho Mbule and Tshepang Moremi in the starting XI and then defend after scoring a goal, not just defending a 0-0 score.
