Egypt 1-0 South Africa: Mohamed Salah converts from the spot in controversial AFCON win

Mohamed Salah secured Egypt’s 1-0 victory over South Africa with a penalty, maintaining their lead in Group B of the Africa Cup of Nations despite being a player down.

Mohamed Salah scored the winning goal for 10-man Egypt in a controversial 1-0 win over South Africa on matchday two of the Africa Cup of Nations at Stade Adrar on Friday.

The Egyptians top Group B with six points after their narrow victory against Bafana Bafana. Bafana remain second with three points after the defeat.

Salah won a controversial penalty after Khuliso Mudau’s hand struck him in the face inside the box.

Referee Pacifique Ndabihawenimana decided to award Egypt the penalty after a lengthy VAR check. Salah converted from the spot in the 45th minute.

Two minutes after the Pharaohs scored, Mohamed Hany got sent off after being shown a second yellow card. South Africa had their tails up in the second half, enjoying a lion’s share of ball possession.

Mohamed El Shenawy pulled off a fantastic save to deny Aubrey Modiba in the 79th minute. Lyle Foster set up Modiba with a cheeky pass inside the box, but the keeper saved his shot with the outside of the boot.

South Africa thought they had won a penalty in the 88th minute after Yasser Ibrahim handled the ball just outside the box.

The referee went to check the penalty appeal by the South Africans, but awarded a freekick instead after a VAR review.

Siyabonga Ngezana’s stoppage-time header was also unbelievably saved by the Egyptian shot stopper. El Shenawy made six crucial saves in the clash.

Egypt edged Zimbabwe 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations opener at Stade Adrar on 22 December 2025. English Premier League goal poachers Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah both scored in the thriller.

Prince Dube put Zimbabwe in front in the 20th minute, assisted by Emmanuel Jalai. However, the Pharaohs staged an epic comeback in the second half.

Manchester City star Marmoush equalised for the Egyptians in the 64th minute, assisted by Mohamed Hamdi. Salah of Liverpool then scored the winner in the 90+1 minute, assisted by Mostafa Mohamed.

South Africa Latest Results

South Africa edged Angola 2-1 in a closely contested Africa Cup of Nations clash at Stade de Marrakech on 22 December 2025.

Orlando Pirates star Oswin Appollis opened the scoring in the 21st minute, assisted by Lyle Foster. The Burnley forward then scored the winner for Bafana Bafana in the 79th minute with the assistance of Tshepang Moremi.

Moremi, who came on in the 46th minute, also had a goal disallowed for offside in the 51st minute after a VAR review. Show scored Angola’s goal in the 35th minute, assisted by Fredy.

Egypt vs South Africa: Head-to-Head

South Africa has scored four goals against Egypt in their last two encounters, conceding only two goals. Bafana Bafana won one of the previous two games.

Bafana Bafana defeated Egypt 3-1 in Cairo in the second leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers on 9 March 2025.

CHAN was exclusively for players competing in local leagues. The tournament has reportedly been cancelled.

Neo Maema put South Africa in front in the 15th minute, and Yandisa Mfolozi scored the second goal in the 26th minute.

Six minutes later, Mohamed El Sayed Shika reduced the deficit for the Pharaohs in the 32nd minute. However, Siphelele Luthuli extended Bafana’s score in the 50th minute.

Luthuli converted from the spot, giving his nation a commanding 3-1 win.

South Africa 1-1 Egypt

South Africa and Egypt drew 1-1 in Bloemfontein in the first leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers on 2 March 2025.

The Pharaohs scored the first goal of the match in the 68th minute through Mohamed Abdelaal. However, Bafana Bafana’s Jamie Webber levelled the score with a stunning goal in the 79th minute.
