Steven Gerrard’s first-half goal helped Liverpool secure a narrow victory against Marseille in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League at Anfield on 26 November 2008.

Gerrard put the English giants in the lead in the 23rd minute, assisted by former Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso. Pepe Reina pulled off five vital saves to prevent the visitors from finding an equaliser in the clash.

Marseille 1-2 Liverpool

Liverpool edged Marseille 2-1 in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League at Stade Velodrome on 16 September 2008. Steven Gerrard scored twice in the clash.

Lorik Canaopened the scoring in the 23rd minute, giving the hosts an early lead. Benoit Cheyrou assisted him.

Three minutes later, Gerrard equalised for the visitors with the assistance of Dirk Kuyt. Gerrard then converted from the spot in the 32nd minute, giving Liverpool a 2-1 victory.

Marseille 0-4 Liverpool

Liverpool thrashed Marseille 4-0 in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League at Stade Velodrome on 11 December 2007.

Steven Gerrard failed to convert from the spot in the 4th minute, but quickly rectified his mistake by scoring from the rebound.

Former Spain forward Fernando Torres then doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 11th minute, assisted by Harry Kewell. Kewell then assisted Dirk Kuyt in scoring the visitors’ third goal in the 48th minute.

As if three goals were not enough, Ryan Babel made it 4-0 in the 90+1 minute with the assistance of Fabio Aurelio.

Liverpool 0-1 Marseille

Marseille edged Liverpool 1-0 in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League at Anfield on 3 October 2007. Liverpool sank to a late goal by the visitors.

Mathieu Valbuena scored the winner in the 77th minute, assisted by Boudewijn Zenden. Marseille were the better side on the night, creating many goal-scoring opportunities in the showdown.

Pepe Reina pulled off seven massive saves to prevent the visitors from scoring more goals against the hosts.

Marseille 2-1 Liverpool

Marseille edged Liverpool 2-1 in the second leg of their last 16 UEFA Cup clash at Stade Velodrome on 25 March 2004.

The visitors’ Emile Heskey opened the scoring in the 15th minute. However, Didier Drogba converted from the spot in the 38th minute, making it 1-1.

Abdoulaye Meite then scored the hosts’ winning goal in the 58th minute, eliminating Liverpool from the tournament

Marseille advanced to the next stage after beating Liverpool 3-2 on aggregate. The French giants and Liverpool drew 1-1 in the first leg of the fixture.
