Harry Kane on Atletico Madrid Tactics Against Bayern Munich

Responding to media questions at a presser, the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner opened up about the kind of game he expects from Atleti in Round 4 of the UEFA Champions League in Spain.

The clinical English forward said he expects a tough game against Diego Simeone’s men. Atleti are known for their solid defensive structure in big matches.

They’re a tough team to break down because of counter-press tactics, and they keep a good defensive shape. Some football critics even accuse Simeone’s boys of parking the bus against good opponents.

Simeone’s charges are not only good at the back. They can also launch lightning-fast counter-attacks. Atleti’s attackers have mastered the art of transition football, and most of their goals come from offensive transitions.

“We know defensively they can be really solid, really compact. They’re gonna be tough to break down. They’ll be physical. They’ll try to make it tough for us. They’ll press us, especially in their stadium.”

Simeone Compliments Kane After Ballon d’Or Win

The goal machine shared that it gave him “a lot of pride” to be complimented by a successful modern football manager like Simeone. Kane added that regardless of the compliment, he is aware that Simeone will use every defensive tactic to try and stop him.

“I’m sure he’ll be doing his best to try and stop me and the team, but of course I appreciate those kind words from him.”

Kane Confirms Kompany Will Not Be on the Bench

The multi-award-winning striker also confirmed that Vincent Kompany will not be on Bayern’s dugout when they face Atleti. Kompany is still recovering after receiving hospital treatment for meningeal irritation.

He said missing Kompany and key injured players has brought the Bayern Munich squad together and elevated their fighting spirit.

Some of the missing players include Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry, who both got injured during Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund in their last match. Luis Diaz, who scored twice against PSG, is also injured.

“We’re in a spell where we are missing some key players, obviously, and then we’re missing our coach. But I think it gives everyone an opportunity to prove themselves in this team.”

Kane added that the Bavarians were doing “more than okay” despite missing some of their stars and without their head coach.

The Bundesliga champions are undefeated in their last ten matches in all competitions. Of those games, Bayern won six, with one win and two draws in the Champions League.
