Orlando Pirates were crowned the Betway Premiership champions in the 2025/26 season after accumulating 69 points in 30 matches.
The Buccaneers had last won the 16-team league title in the 2011/12 season. The Sea Robbers dethroned defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns on the last match of the season, defeating Orbit College 2-0 at Mbombela Stadium on 23 May 2026.
Due to Orlando Pirates’ impressive stats in their 2025/26 league campaign, the star-studded Sundowns finished second with 68 points.
How Many Matches Did Orlando Pirates Win in the 2025/26 Season?
Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team impressively won a whopping 21 out of 30 matches. The Johannesburg-based side won most matches in the 2025/6 season. Their arch-rivals, Sundowns, managed to win 20 out of 30 games.
During the campaign, the Sea Robbers drew six matches and lost only three. Only Sundowns lost fewer matches than Pirates. Downs suffered only two defeats in 30 games.
High-Scoring Team in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership Table
Orlando Pirates scored the most goals in the Betway Premiership in the 2025/26 season. The new champions netted 58 goals in 30 matches, while conceding only 12.
Amabhakaniya’s 2025/26 squad had clinical finishers, including Tshepang Moremi, Relebohile Mofokeng, and Oswin Appollis. The team’s exciting form saw many of their players called up to the national team, affectionately known as Bafana Bafana.
Pirates players were not just excellent in their offensive play; they were also solid at the back. Conceding only 12 goals the whole season is a true testament to their defensive abilities. They conceded the fewest number of goals in the elite South African league.
Biggest Win of the Season
Orlando Pirates trounced a 10-man TS Galaxy 6-0 in a Betway Premiership thriller at Mbombela Stadium on 22 March 2026.
Coming into the match, Pirates were the favourite to win, and Lentswe Motaung gave the Buccaneers a massive advantage when he received a red card in the 4th minute.
Relebohile Mofokeng scored a hat-trick in the thriller, while Tshepang Moremi and Kamogelo Sebelebele each scored a goal. The other goal was an own goal in the 44th minute. The 6-0 victory was Pirates’ biggest win of their 2025/26 league campaign.
Mofokeng was Orlando Pirates’ top scorer in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. He scored 10 goals and provided eight assists in 26 appearances.
Clean Sheets
Orlando Pirates’ goalkeeper Sipho Chaine kept an inspiring 21 clean sheets in 30 matches. Pirates’ success in the 2025/26 season can also, without any doubt, be attributed to their discipline at the back.
The Buccaneers only conceded goals in nine matches the entire season. Out of those nine games, they drew six and lost only three. Ouaddou’s team also did not concede more than three goals in a match.

Only Three Defeats in the 2025/26 Season
Orlando Pirates had the shakiest start to their 2025/26 campaign. They lost two matches in a row, but finished on top of the league! Now that’s how you make a comeback!
In their opening match of the season at Orlando Stadium on 9 August 2025, Sekhukhune stunned the Sea Robbers 1-0. They conceded in the 48th minute.
In the following match, Marumo Gallants edged the Mighty Bucs 2-1 at the Thohoyandou Stadium on 12 August 2025. The Buccaneers’ Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring in the 16th minute, but Marumo Gallants staged an epic comeback victory on the night.
In their biggest match of the season, Orlando Pirates hosted Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium on 18 February 2026. The hosts lost the top-of-the-table clash 2-1 in front of thousands of their home fans.
Many thought Sundowns would successfully defend their league title after the narrow win against Pirates.
However, Pirates successfully won nine and drew four of their remaining matches, therefore becoming Betway Premiership champions. They beat Sundowns with just one point at the top of the table.
