Kylian Mbappé put the Spanish giants in front in the 30th minute, assisted by Raul Asencio. However, Andreas Schjelderup levelled the score for the hosts in the 36th minute, assisted by Vangelis Pavlidis.
Pavlidis then converted from the spot in the 45+5 minute, ensuring Benfica went into the break leading 2-1. Schjelderup then sent the Benfica faithful into a frenzy when he extended the home side’s lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute.
However, Mbappé made it 3-2 in the 58th minute, assisted by Arda Güler. The referee then showed two players from Los Blancos red cards in stoppage time.
Asencio was red-carded in the 90+2 minute after receiving his second yellow card. Four minutes later, the referee also sent off Rodrygo for receiving his second yellow card.
