South Africa thrashed Egypt 3-1 in Cairo in the second leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers on 9 March 2025. CHAN was exclusively for players competing in local leagues. The tournament has reportedly been cancelled.
Bafana Bafana’s Neo Maema opened the scoring in the 15th minute, and Yandisa Mfolozi doubled the lead in the 26th minute.
Six minutes later, Mohamed El Sayed Shika pulled one back for the Pharaohs in the 32nd minute. However, Siphelele Luthuli extended the visitors’ score in the 50th minute. Luthuli converted from the spot, giving South Africa a commanding 3-1 victory.
South Africa 1-1 Egypt
South Africa and Egypt played to a 1-1 draw in Bloemfontein in the first leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers on 2 March 2025.
The Pharaohs opened the scoring in the 68th minute through Mohamed Abdelaal’s goal. However, Jamie Webber equalised with a stunning goal in the 79th minute.
Egypt 0-1 South Africa
South Africa stunned Egypt 1-0 in their own backyard in the Africa Cup of Nations on 6 July 2019. Even Liverpool star Mohamed Salah could not score or stop Bafana Bafana from advancing to the next round.
Thembinkosi Lorch silenced the packed Cairo International Stadium when he scored the winner in the 85th minute, knocking the hosts out of the tournament. Lebo Mothiba assisted Lorch.
South Africa 1-0 Egypt
South Africa edged Egypt 1-0 in a friendly international at Orlando Stadium on 6 September 2016. Former Orlando Pirates star Mpho Makola scored the winning goal against the Pharaohs.
Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah was also in the lineup when an inspired Bafana Bafana beat them again.

Egypt 0-0 South Africa
Egypt and South Africa shared the spoils after a goalless draw in Cairo in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers on 5 June 2011.
At the time of the draw, Egypt had failed to win a single match in their group and ranked at the bottom. The Pharaohs fans jeered them off the field after their dismal performance at home.
