Memphis Depay made history when the Netherlands beat Lithuania 3-2 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Sunday, 7 September 2025.
Depay became the Netherlands’ all-time top scorer after netting his country’s first goal in the exciting showdown.
Depay was tied with Robin van Persie on 50 goals when he scored the historic goal in the 11th minute of the match, taking his tally to 51. Van Persie last played for his country in August 2017.

Fenerbahçe’s Quinten Timber also netted his first goal for his country during the thrilling clash. He scored in the 33rd minute, extending his side’s lead to 2-0. Lithuania fought back and levelled matters before the halftime break.
In the second half, Depay scored his second goal in the 64th minute, making the score 3-2. After the match, he became the Netherlands’ all-time top scorer with 52 goals.
Since making history on this day, Depay has added three more goals to his international tally. He now has 55 goals, cementing his place in the Netherlands’ rich football legacy.
The Corinthians star is also Oranje’s all-time top assister. He recorded his 35th assist when the Netherlands thrashed Finland 4-0, breaking Wesley Sneijder’s old record.

Has Netherlands Lost Any Group G Matches?
Before this match, The Netherlands had played three World Cup qualifiers in Group G. Oranje had won two matches and drawn one. The group is made up of Poland, Finland, Lithuania, and Malta.
Coming to this match, the Netherlands were already topping the group with seven points. They had scored 11 goals and only conceded one. They’re now sitting on 10 points after playing four games.

Lithuania has not won any matches yet in their group. They’ve drawn three and lost two now. They’ve scored five goals and conceded seven.
Coming into this match, they had an outside chance of finishing in the top two. In their last group fixture, Lithuania drew 1-1 with Malta on 4 September 2025. The two nations also played a goalless draw on 7 June 2025.
Before that match, Lithuania drew 2-2 with Finland on 24 March 2025. The only game they lost was against Poland, who edged them 1-0 on 21 March 2025.
