Brighton 2-1 Manchester City: Brajan Gruda completes Seagulls’ epic comeback after Erling Haaland goal

Brighton secured their first Premier League win of the season, defeating Manchester City 2-1, with Milner equalizing and Gruda scoring the winning goal.

Brighton got their first win of the 2025/26 Premier League season in front of their home supporters at the American Express Stadium on Sunday, 31 August. The Seagulls beat Manchester City 2-1 on matchday three of the new campaign.

City’s lethal striker Erling Haaland put his team in the driving seat in the first half after linking up with Ormar Marmoush in the 34th minute. Pep Guardiola’s side was leading 1-0 going into the halftime break.

James Milner spearheaded Brighton’s spirited comeback. Milner levelled the score from the spot kick in the 67th minute. Matheus Nunes handled the ball inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot after a VAR review.

Brajan Gruda completed his team’s comeback when he scored the second in the dying minutes of the match. Kaoru Mitoma set him up with an intelligent pass.

How Did Brighton Perform in the First Two Premier League Fixtures?

Coming into this match, Brighton was still looking for their first win of the season. They drew 1-1 with Fulham in their season opener and lost 2-0 to Everton on matchday two of the Premier League.

Manchester City suffered a bruising defeat at the hands of Tottenham. Spurs beat Guardiola’s side 2-0 at their home ground, the Etihad, on 23 August.

City had a dream start to their new campaign. They thumped Wolves 4-0 in their season opener on 16 August. Haaland scored a brace, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki scored the other two for the visitors.

Brighton vs Manchester City: Last Two Matches

Brighton and Manchester City drew 2-2 on 15 March at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland scored from the penalty spot, but Pervis Estupinan cancelled Haaland’s goal when he made it 1-1. Omar Marmoush made it 2-1 before halftime. However, Abdukodir Khusanov levelled the score with an own goal in the second minute of the second half.

Brighton were victorious on 9 November 2024 at the American Express Stadium. They beat their visitors 2-1. Haaland put his side in the lead in the first half. João Pedro levelled matters in the 78th minute, and Matt O’Riley completed the epic comeback in the 83rd minute of the showdown.
