Manchester United fans urged coach Ruben Amorim to alter his ineffective 3-4-2-1 formation after the team was eliminated by Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.

Manchester United supporters took to social media to advise head coach Ruben Amorim to change his formation after a humiliating defeat at Blundell Park on Wednesday, 27 August.

Grimsby Town, a Two League side, beat Manchester United 12-11 in penalties, ultimately knocking them out of the EFL Carabao Cup. The game was level at 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes. Ruben Amorim’s name hogged the trends list and headlines following the embarrassing loss.

Manchester United Supporters: “Change the Formation”

The Man U faithful advised their embattled coach to change his 3-4-2-1 formation, citing that it’s not working in English football. Some added that Amorim’s tactics don’t suit the type of players at his disposal.

Manchester United posted a video of Amorim sharing his thoughts after the match, where he sincerely apologised to the team’s fans. Commenting under the Premier League side’s Instagram post, scores of supporters asked Amorim to change his style of play.

togamunte wrote: “It’s not about the apology. Maybe reflect on what’s best for the club. Is 3-4-3 not the best for the club? Maybe 4-3-3 is or 4-5-1 or even back to 4-4-2, which this club is famous for. I mean, we have those world-class players, but we still get those kinds of results?”

prapzgrg added: “Change the formation, man. What is this hexagon formation? He has no plan B, he is inept.”

Has Manchester United Won in the 2025/26 Premier League Season?

After spending over £207.5 million on new players, Manchester United has not won any matches yet. Amorim’s side drew 1-1 with Fulham on Sunday, 24 August, and lost 1-0 in front of their home fans in their season opener against Arsenal on Sunday, 17 August.
