Mamelodi Sundowns: Cassius Mailula Opens Up About the CAF Super Cup

The CAF Super Cup pits the winners of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League against the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup champions.

USM Alger qualified for the clash after defeating Egypt’s Zamalek SC 8-7 on penalties on 16 May following a two-legged final that finished 1-1 on aggregate. Sundowns defeated Morocco’s AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate on 24 May.

Mailula shared that the current crop of players at Masandawana also want to write their names in the South African heavyweights’ history books.

“We’re really looking forward to playing this game on Sunday. Everyone is excited. It’s a big game for us. We also want to make history.”

Masandawana won the CAF Super Cup in 2017 against TP Mazembe at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Ricardo Nascimento netted the winner from the spot-kick in the 83rd minute.

Mailula on Why They Want To Win Against USM Alger

Mailula also stated that one of the main reasons it’s important for the current players to win the match. He said they also want to be in the same class as Sundowns’ 2017 Super Cup-winning cohort of stars.

“We also want to do the same thing. We also want to repeat the history that the Hlompo Kekanas did.”

On the preparations, Mailula said everything is going according to plan, adding that the players are well-rested, focused and ready for the game.

On Failing To Defend the CAF Champions League Title

The 25-year-old footballer said everyone was heartbroken after suffering the early exit. Sundowns were eliminated by Angolan side Wiliete SC on the away-goal rule in the second preliminary round on 23 October 2026 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Miguel Cardoso‘s side drew 1-1 at home with Wiliete after playing a goalless draw in Angola.

“It broke our hearts a lot. We know that we could have done better in that game to give ourselves a chance to play in the group stage.”

Speaking to Thabo Mosia on Radio 2000‘s Game On, Mailula also revealed how the players are trying to make up for the loss by winning every match to show their supporters how sorry they are.

“You know at Sundowns, we don’t take losses very well. I can see now with the attitude of the players, we’re trying to win every game to show our fans that we didn’t mean to lose that game.”

Mailula also added that they’re working hard to regain the league title after losing it to Orlando Pirates in the 2025/26 season.
